La Doña Julia was a beggar woman who sat on the steps of La Casa Canal, a stone palace that was once the home of the Counts of Canal who ruled San Miguel de Allende, in Mexico. Now it is home to Banamex, and the most coveted begging site in town. I had to pass this remarkable woman each day on my way to the sculpture studio, at the cost of many pesos.
